Mary Marmery is a ceramic artist making hand built decorative objects. Inspiration for her work comes from Ancient Greece, Cycladic art .. and organic forms. She has moved from the traditional firing and glazing of wares to a process called Raku. This involves placing the hot wares into combustible materials in a metal container. The combustibles, which vary from sawdust, wood shaving, dried leaves and even seaweed, ignite immediately on contact with the hot object.
A lid seals the container to make it airtight whereby a reduction process begins. This produces metallic and iridescent glazes , a random process with truly original outcomes. Another of the Raku processes involves white slip fired objects that have areas masked out, and once placed into the combustible materials, are marked with the smoke, literally painting the surface with smoky patterns. There is a prehistoric feel to these smoked pots.
