Gillian R Western was born in north London and moved to the Winchmore Hill area in 1952.
Her main interest has always been painting ... and at school she won several prizes for art, which she passed at A Level. During that time she took a year’s course at what was then Hornsey College of Art, intending to make a career in that field.
However, she subsequently decided to specialise in languages, and on leaving college went to work in Switzerland and Italy before returning home, where her life was diverted into the world of tourism, banking and accountancy, as well as a wide range of charity and voluntary work embracing culture, food, health and the environment.

After bringing up her family, she was free to start travelling around the world with her husband, mainly on cruise liners, where, in the peace and quiet of her cabin, she has been able to return to her former love of painting by portraying, in water colour, some of the fascinating sights that have caught her keen eye.
